This round-the-clock firing in the woods outside of Oxford lasted 56 hours. During every six-hour shift, each person on duty is responsible for placing logs into the fire and stoking the flames every few minutes to bring the temperature to 1300°C. The unglazed pots inside the kiln react to the wood-ash atmosphere, ultimately self-glazing in unpredictable patterns.
